On the relative frequencies of core-collapse supernovae sub-types: the role of progenitor metallicity
نویسنده
چکیده
We show that the observed ratio NIb,c/NII of the subtypes Ib,c and II core-collapse supernovae depends on the metallicity of the host galaxy, as expected on theoretical grounds. However, the observed relation differs considerably from expectations based on non-rotating models of single stars with mass loss. We argue that the predictions of recent models with rotation offer a much better agreement with observations, at least for progenitor stars with solar metallicity; calculations of models with higher and lower metallicities are required in order to substantiate these conclusions. We also suggest that systematic surveys of core collapse supernovae up to redshift z ∼1 with the SNAP satellite would allow to probe the effect of metallicity on supernovae properties during the past history of the universe.

Comparisons of the radial distributions of core-collapse supernovae with those of young and old stellar populations
We present observational constraints on the nature of core-collapse supernovae through an investigation into their radial distributions with respect to those of young and old stellar populations within their host galaxies, as traced by Hα emission and R-band light respectively. We discuss results and the implications they have on the nature of supernova progenitors, for a sample of 177 core-col...
متن کاملRelative frequencies of supernovae types: dependence on host galaxy magnitude, galactocentric radius and local metallicity
Context. Stellar evolution theory suggests that the relationship between number ratios of supernova (SN) types and metallicity holds important clues as to the nature of the progenitor stars (mass, metallicity, rotation, binarity, etc). Aims. We investigate the metallicity dependence of number ratios of various SN types, using a large sample of SN along with information on their radial position ...
متن کاملThe Progenitor Dependence of the Preexplosion Neutrino Emission in Core-collapse Supernovae
We perform spherically-symmetric general-relativistic simulations of core collapse and the postbounce preexplosion phase in 32 presupernova stellar models of solar metallicity with zero-age-main-sequence masses of 12M to 120M . Using energy-dependent three-species neutrino transport in the two-moment approximation with an analytic closure, we show that the emitted neutrino luminosities and spec...
متن کاملConstraints on core - collapse supernova progenitors from correlations with H α emission ⋆
We present observational constraints on the nature of the different core-collapse supernova types through an investigation of the association of their explosion sites with recent star formation , as traced by Hα+[NII] line emission. We discuss results on the analysed data of the positions of 168 core-collapse supernovae with respect to the Hα emission within their host galaxies. From our analys...
متن کاملSeeking Core-Collapse Supernova Progenitors in Pre-Explosion Images
I summarize what we have learned about the nature of stars that ultimately explode as core-collapse supernovae from the examination of images taken prior to the explosion. By registering pre-supernova and post-supernova images, usually taken at high resolution using either space-based optical detectors, or ground-based infrared detectors equipped with laser guide star adaptive optics systems, n...
